Crystal Singing Bowls Research & Development

Crystal singing bowls at Singing Bowls Australia are the result of research and development that began in 2023. We are on our fourth iteration of standard white bowls. Each design is refined as new listening and new findings come to light, and each generation builds on the acoustic and structural insights of the one before it.

Where crystal singing bowls come from

Crystal singing bowls are a modern instrument, developed in the 1980s out of the semiconductor industry. Our comparison of crystal and metal bowls keeps that history plain. The same processes used to grow pure silicon for computer chips were adapted to make quartz crucibles, and someone discovered that those crucibles rang when struck. There is no ancient tradition behind them. We do not connect crystal singing bowls to Atlantis, ancient Egypt, or any other past the evidence does not support.

Those crucibles belong to the Czochralski process. Ultra-pure polycrystalline silicon is melted inside a high-purity fused-quartz crucible, and a single crystal is pulled upward from the melt. The fused-quartz crucible is what rang, which is how crystal singing bowls were discovered. Our note on quartz and computer chips follows the materials: ordinary silica has to be refined a long way before it is pure enough for that crucible.

The bowls we sell are quartz, heated and formed into a bowl. Some stay clear. Some are frosted. Some are infused with gemstones, metals or minerals while they are made, so the look and the tone change together. A colour sprayed onto a finished white bowl is different: the pigment sits on the surface and the quartz underneath is unchanged. Every bowl is checked for pitch, sustain and overtone clarity before it reaches you.

What four iterations changed in our crystal singing bowls

Singing Bowls Australia began in 2023, and the work on our standard white bowls has continued from that year. The white bowls we sell now are the fourth iteration. Three years of research went into it. Our bowls are the product of ongoing research and development, not one catalogue we happened to like. Each design is refined iteratively. If the fundamental wanders, if the sustain collapses, or if the overtones turn muddy, the bowl does not go into the collection.

The same listening shaped the chalices. A crystal singing chalice is a crystal singing bowl on a stem, held in one hand. We tried four or five manufacturers before we settled on the ones we offer, testing the sound while we refined the thickness and the shape.

A wall that is too thick holds the vibration in. Ours are not too thick, so the quartz rings with an open voice. The walls flare outward as they rise. Parallel sides can trap the tone inside the cup; the flare lets it travel into the room. That is the design in the chalice collection. The chalice guide follows the shape and the care, and supplier vetting still sits on our R&D page.

Some of those chalices, and only some, carry a crystal-sandblasted finish. Fine particles of crystal are fused to the outer surface, a shimmering frosted exterior. The others stay smooth. We do not claim that finish changes the note.

In June 2026 Cecily Su, founder of Singing Bowls Australia, trained in gong in the United States with Don Conreaux, known as Grandpa Gong, a co-founder of 3HO and the author of Gong Yoga. She is a Don Conreaux trained gong practitioner. On that trip we also found the highest-purity crystal bowl supplier we have yet carried, after testing the instruments. We supply Soma Energetics tuning forks, and we are an authorised supplier of Crystal Tones™ alchemy bowls. Those are pickup only, from Sydney: the Aqua Aura Gold G# and the Sedona Red Rock D# are on the Crystal Tones page. The America trip is written up on its own.

How to choose crystal singing bowls

Choosing crystal singing bowls starts with the work you want the sound to do. A bowl for meditation at home is a different instrument from one that has to fill a room, and a chalice you carry from person to person is different again. Note, size and finish come after that. If you can, hear them first. Pickup is free, by appointment, in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Write to singingbowlsaus@gmail.com and we will find a time.

Notes. A chakra set of seven is usually C, D, E, F, G, A and B: root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown. F, the heart note, is a warm place to start. Higher notes, including the Soul Star C5, often close a session. Sharp notes, C#, D#, F#, G# and A#, are a separate row, sold as a five-bowl sharps set from about 7 to 11 inches. The chakra guide and the first-bowl guide go further.

Sizes. Our single bowls run from 8 to 16 inches. Smaller ones speak higher and suit practice at home. Larger ones fill a room. In that range are the 12 inch Earth Star B3, the 8 inch Soul Star C5, heart bowls around 9 or 10 inches in F, 14 inch morganite and sapphire bowls, and a 16 inch bowl. A fair guide is 6 to 8 inches for personal use, 9 to 12 inches in the middle, and 13 to 16 inches for a group. Chalices are smaller: 5.25 to 6.25 inches, held by the stem, in F, F#, G#, C# and C5.

Frosted or clear. A clear quartz bowl is the most uncoloured voice: you can see through the wall. A frosted bowl has a matte surface. On our chalices that frost is a crystal-sandblasted finish, and only on some pieces. Larger frosted bowls include a 14 inch bowl, a 16 inch F3, and the heart chakra bowl in F. Quality quartz looks clear, or evenly frosted, not cloudy or streaky. A clear set suits a chakra practice. A single frosted bowl is a common place to start.

Sets. A set of seven is the full row of notes. Our crystal singing bowl sets include standard white quartz, in 6 to 12 inches and in 8 to 14 inches, plus amethyst, morganite and sapphire infused sets. There is a set of three, a white set of three in A, F and D, an Earth Star and Soul Star pair, and the sharps set. A premium white set of seven is made to order. One bowl is already a complete instrument. Shop crystal singing bowls here, with the price on each piece.

To play, rest a larger bowl on an O-ring or hold a small one on the palm, strike the outer wall, then circle the rim with the mallet. Mallets and bags are on the accessories page. The playing guide and the care guide continue from there. You can collect crystal singing bowls free, by appointment, in Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide. Sets and chalices also ship worldwide. Single bowls ship within Australia, and Crystal Tones bowls are pickup only in Sydney. Details are on shipping and refunds.

Questions

What are crystal singing bowls made from?

Quartz crystal, heated and formed into a bowl. They were discovered when fused-quartz crucibles from the Czochralski process, used to grow silicon for chips, were found to ring. Ours may be clear, frosted, or infused with gemstones or minerals.

How long have you been developing your bowls?

Since 2023. The standard white bowls are the fourth iteration, after three years of research, and every bowl is checked for pitch, sustain and overtone clarity.

What is the difference between frosted and clear bowls?

A clear bowl lets you see through the quartz. A frosted bowl has a matte surface. On our chalices that frost is a crystal-sandblasted finish on some pieces only, and we do not claim it changes the note. Larger frosted pieces include 14 inch and 16 inch bowls and the heart chakra bowl in F.

How do I choose a note, a size or a chakra set?

A set of seven is usually C, D, E, F, G, A and B. F, the heart note, is a common place to begin, and the sharps C#, D#, F#, G# and A# are a separate five-bowl set. Single bowls run from 8 to 16 inches. Chalices, 5.25 to 6.25 inches, are held by the stem. Sets come in white, amethyst, morganite and sapphire, with a set of three and an Earth Star and Soul Star pair.

Who decides which bowls you stock?

Cecily Su, founder of Singing Bowls Australia, who trained in gong with Don Conreaux. We play a bowl before it is added. The chalices were chosen after four or five manufacturers.

Can I hear them before I buy, and do you ship?

Yes. Pickup is free, by appointment, in Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide. Bowl sets and crystal singing chalices ship worldwide. Single bowls ship within Australia. Crystal Tones™ bowls are pickup only, from Sydney.
