Your guide to crystal singing bowls

Crystal singing bowls at Singing Bowls Australia are quartz, heated and formed into a bowl. Some stay clear, some are frosted, and some are infused with gemstones, metals or minerals while they are made, so the look and the tone change together. A colour sprayed onto a finished white bowl is different: the pigment sits on the surface, and the quartz underneath is unchanged. Every bowl on this page is checked for pitch, sustain and overtone clarity. Notes

Choosing crystal singing bowls starts with the note, and we put that note on the piece when one is recorded. A chakra set of seven is usually C, D, E, F, G, A and B: root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown. F, the heart note, is a warm place to start with a single bowl. Higher notes, including the Soul Star C5, often close a session. Sharp notes, C#, D#, F#, G# and A#, are a separate five-bowl set, about 7 to 11 inches. Sizes

Size decides whether crystal singing bowls stay in a quiet room or fill a group. Larger crystal singing bowls speak lower, and smaller ones speak higher. Single bowls run from 8 to 16 inches, including a 12 inch Earth Star B3, an 8 inch Soul Star C5, heart bowls around 9 or 10 inches, 14 inch morganite and sapphire bowls, and a 16 inch F3. A fair guide is 6 to 8 inches for personal use, 9 to 12 inches in the middle, and 13 to 16 inches for a group. Chalices are 5.25 to 6.25 inches, held by the stem, in F, F#, G#, C# and C5, and each one comes with a mallet and a bag.

Frosted or clear

Frosted and clear are the two looks of crystal singing bowls in plain quartz. A clear bowl lets you see through the wall. A frosted bowl has a matte surface. On our chalices that frost is a crystal-sandblasted finish, and only on some pieces. We do not claim it changes the note. The 16 inch F3 is frosted quartz, listed as a heart chakra drone. Quality quartz looks clear, or evenly frosted, not cloudy or streaky. A clear set suits a chakra practice. A single frosted bowl is a common place to start.

Alchemy and infused bowls

Alchemy and gemstone crystal singing bowls sit beside the white quartz. Amethyst, morganite and sapphire sets are infused while the bowl is made, each a set of seven. The film on this page is the amethyst set, and it also sounds the morganite and sapphire bowls. There is a set of three crystal-infused bowls at 7, 9 and 11 inches, and a white set of three in A, F and D. Crystal Tones alchemy bowls are made in the United States, and we are an authorised supplier. We list the Aqua Aura Gold G# and the Sedona Red Rock D#. Both are pickup only, from Sydney. An infused bowl is not a colour painted onto white quartz.

Chakra sets

A chakra set is the usual way people buy crystal singing bowls. White quartz crystal singing bowls in a set of seven are the centre of this page: 6 to 12 inches, and 8 to 14 inches, beside the amethyst, morganite and sapphire sets. There is an Earth Star and Soul Star pair, the 12 inch B3 with the 8 inch C5, and the sharps set. A premium white set of seven, 6 to 12 inches, is made to order. Its listing says pre-order, ultra thick and ultra pure, our fourth iteration. The standard white sets are the third iteration, with at least 18 seconds of sustain on the listing. One bowl is already a complete instrument.

Care

Crystal singing bowls are quartz, and quartz is brittle, clear or frosted. A bowl can crack if it is dropped, knocked, or shocked by a sudden change of temperature. Lift with two hands, and do not set one on a hard surface without a cushion. To play, rest a larger bowl on an O-ring or hold a small one in the palm, strike the outer wall, then circle the rim. The overseas rate is shown at checkout. A single bowl ships within Australia. Crystal Tones bowls are pickup only in Sydney. One shipping charge applies per order, at the highest rate in the cart, and orders usually leave on the day of payment or the next business day. Change of mind is final.
