A crystal singing chalice is a crystal singing bowl that rises from a slender stem, so you can hold it in one hand and carry the tone with you. Some people call it a crystal grail, others a hand-held sound chalice or a stemmed crystal singing bowl, and many sound healers simply call it their practitioner bowl, because it is the portable crystal singing bowl that comes with them from session to session. If you have only ever met crystal sound as a bowl resting on a cushion, a chalice can feel like a small mystery at first. It is the same clear, sustained, bell-like voice, given a shape that can move through a room, over a person lying in stillness, or into a bag when you are travelling.
This guide walks through what a chalice is, how it differs from a traditional crystal singing bowl, how our chalices are shaped, and how to choose, play and care for one. When you are ready to hear them, the crystal singing chalice collection lists every piece we currently have, with its colour, size, note and price.
What Is a Crystal Singing Chalice?
A crystal chalice is a crystal singing bowl that has been given a stem. Instead of resting on a cushion or an O-ring, the bowl sits up off the hand like a goblet, and you hold it by the stem while you strike or circle the rim with a mallet. The shape looks a lot like a grail, which is why crystal grail and crystal chalice are used for the same instrument. Nothing touches the singing crystal except the mallet, so the tone stays free, and you can lift it, turn it, and bring it close.
Chalice or Crystal Singing Bowl
A traditional crystal singing bowl is a floor or table instrument. Its size, its weight and the fullness of its tone come from the way it rests and resonates in one place, and in a sound bath those bowls are usually set out and played from where you are sitting, layering long tones across everyone in the room. A stemmed crystal singing bowl is made to be held. It trades a little of that deep, room-filling volume for movement, intimacy and direction. Because the chalice is lifted off any surface, nothing damps the vibration, and the sound can be carried right up to the ear, the heart or the crown.
A crystal singing bowl, or a full set, is the foundation when you want to fill a room from one spot. A chalice is the practitioner crystal bowl when the work is close and personal, and it is also the obvious portable crystal singing bowl when you teach in more than one place or simply want your practice to come with you. Many people end up wanting both, because you can open a session with the bowls and then walk a chalice to each person to close. If you are still finding a first instrument, how to choose your first singing bowl sits kindly beside this guide.
How Our Chalices Are Shaped
The voice of a chalice begins with the crystal itself, long before a mallet ever meets the rim. Our chalices are not too thick. A wall that is too thick holds the vibration in and dampens the sound, and the thickness of ours is there so the quartz can ring with a clear, open voice. You feel it when the tone wakes: it does not sit heavily in the crystal, it lifts.
The shape carries that voice the rest of the way. The walls flare outwards as they rise, opening as they go, rather than climbing straight up with parallel sides. When the sides run parallel, the tone can turn inside the cup and stay caught there. The flare invites the sound out into the room, so when you hold the stem and let the chalice sing, the note travels toward you and toward the person you are playing for. It is a quiet piece of design, and once you have heard it you start to notice how freely the tone leaves the bowl and fills the space around it.
This is the shape and the thickness of the chalices in our own collection. You can see each one, and the price it carries today, on the chalices page.
The Research Behind Our Chalices
These designs were not the first ones we held. We tried four or five different manufacturers before we settled on the chalices we offer now, and each round was a chance to play, to listen, and to notice what the crystal was doing in the hand. We were testing for sound, and we were refining the thickness and the shape at the same time, coming back again and again until the wall let the quartz ring and the flare carried the tone out into the room. What you find in the collection is the design that remained after that listening. The wider story of how we test and choose what we stock lives on our R&D page.
A Frosted Shimmer on Some Chalices
Some of our chalices, and only some, carry a crystal-sandblasted finish. Fine particles of crystal are fused to the outer surface, and the result is a shimmering, frosted, crystal-infused exterior that catches the light as you turn the chalice in your hand. The others remain smooth, so as you look through the collection you will see that frosted shimmer on certain pieces and a smooth surface on the rest.
How to Choose a Crystal Chalice
Start with the work you want the sound to do. A heart-note F is a warm, welcoming place to begin, whether the chalice is clear, milky white, pale pink or dreamy purple. F# sits a little higher, at the high heart, where feeling and voice meet, and it is lovely when you want the tone to rise from the chest toward the throat. G# sits between the throat and the third eye. C# and the bright C5 Soul Star reach upward, and they suit ceremony, meditation and the close of a session, when you want the room to feel light and lifted.
Colour is part of the choosing as well. Clear quartz is the most uncoloured voice in the collection. Blue carries a sense of clarity. Milky white feels soft and calming. Pink and pale pink open the heart. Purple, including the dreamy purple, has a more ceremonial presence. You can choose by colour, by note, or simply by the feeling a tone gives you when you hear it, which is why we are always glad when someone comes to listen in person before they decide.
In the collection right now the sizes run from 5.25" to 6.25", and the notes are C5 (Soul Star), C#, F, F# and G#, in blue, clear, milky white, pale pink, pink, purple and dreamy purple. Our crystal singing chalices currently range from $520 to $860 AUD, and each listing on the chalices page shows the price of that piece, so you are always looking at what is actually here. Every chalice comes with a mallet and a bag, so you can play it the day it arrives and carry it safely between sessions.
How to Play
Hold the stem loosely in your non-dominant hand, the way you would hold a glass you did not want to warm, and keep your fingers on the stem and away from the bowl so the crystal can ring freely. Let your wrist stay relaxed and your elbow soft, because you may hold the chalice for a little while. With the mallet that comes with your chalice, strike the outer wall once, gently, about halfway between the rim and the base of the bowl, and let the mallet bounce away so the note can bloom. While that first tone is still in the air, press the side of the mallet against the outer rim at a soft angle and circle slowly, with even pressure, moving your forearm rather than only your wrist. Within a few rotations the sound gathers and sustains. If you hear a rattle, slow down and press a little more firmly. If the sound will not build at all, check that no finger is touching the bowl. Every chalice has its own sweet spot, and finding it is part of getting to know the instrument.
Once the tone is sustaining, a hand-held sound chalice invites you to move. You can stand, walk and carry the sound with you, sweeping it slowly through the air, raising it, or lowering it, as long as the movement stays smooth, because a sudden jerk makes the tone wobble. In one-on-one work you can bring the sound close without touching the person: a little above the heart, beside the ear, over the crown, or along the length of the spine. Tell them what you are about to do, keep the chalice well clear of the face, and never rest a ringing chalice directly on the body. To finish, lift the mallet away and let the sound fade, then rest the chalice upright, or on its side, on something soft. That silence is part of the practice. The striking and rimming basics are the same ones in how to play a crystal singing bowl, with the stem doing the holding that a cushion would do for a floor bowl.
Caring for Your Chalice
Always pick your chalice up by the stem, with your other hand under the bowl. Store it upright, or wrapped in soft cloth inside the bag it came with, and keep it away from hard floors, sudden changes of temperature and knocks against other bowls. To clean it, wipe it with a soft, damp microfibre cloth and dry it straight away, and keep harsh chemicals away from any coloured finish. Our bowl care and maintenance guide goes further for the rest of your instruments.
Pickup, Shipping and the Sale Itself
You can collect a chalice free, by appointment, in Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide, and you are welcome to hear the notes before you choose. Write to us at singingbowlsaus@gmail.com and we will find a time. If you would rather we send it, we pack it carefully and ship it with Australia Post. Within Australia a chalice is $23, because every chalice we sell is 10" or smaller, which is the same band as a single bowl of that size. Overseas, a crystal singing chalice ships worldwide, and the rate is shown at checkout. Orders usually leave us on the day you pay, or on the next business day.
You can pay by card, or with Afterpay, which lets you split the amount into four payments. All sales are final for a change of mind. Each instrument carries its own energetic imprint, and once a piece has left us and been with you, it is yours. If a delivery arrives damaged, please tell us within three days, ideally with photos of the chalice and the packaging, and keep the packaging until we have sorted it out. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law still apply when something is faulty, not as described, or damaged in transit. The full detail is on our shipping and refund pages.
Crystal Tones™ alchemy bowls are a different part of the shop. They are pickup only, from Sydney, and we do not ship them.
