For thousands of years, contemplative traditions have used vocal practices—chanting, humming, toning, mantras—to induce calm and altered states. Buddhist monks hum. Hindu practitioners chant Om. Gregorian monks sustain long tones. Sufi dhikr involves rhythmic vocalisation. The universality of these practices across unconnected cultures suggests they tap into something fundamental about human physiology.
Modern neuroscience has identified the mechanism: the vagus nerve. When you hum, chant, or tone, you are directly stimulating the primary pathway of the parasympathetic nervous system. The monks were doing neuroscience without the terminology.
The Vagus Nerve: Your Body's "Rest and Digest" Highway
The vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) is the longest nerve in the autonomic nervous system, running from the brainstem down through the neck and into the chest and abdomen. "Vagus" comes from the Latin for "wandering," and the nerve wanders extensively—connecting to the heart, lungs, digestive system, and numerous organs.
It serves as the main channel of the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for:
- Lowering heart rate
- Reducing blood pressure
- Stimulating digestion
- Decreasing inflammation
- Promoting calm and social engagement
When vagal tone (the activity level of the vagus nerve) is high, the body shifts toward rest, repair, and connection. When it's low, the sympathetic "fight or flight" system dominates. Modern life—stress, screens, sedentary behaviour—tends to suppress vagal tone. Restoring it is a key goal of many wellness practices.
The Throat Connection
Crucially for our purposes, branches of the vagus nerve innervate the throat, larynx, and vocal cords. When you produce sound with your voice—especially sustained, resonant sound—you create vibrations that directly stimulate vagal fibres.
The mechanism: Vocalisation activates the laryngeal branches of the vagus nerve. The vibration signals "safety" to the nervous system (we don't hum when fleeing predators). This triggers parasympathetic activation—heart rate drops, breathing deepens, cortisol decreases.
This explains why humming feels calming even before any conscious relaxation. The effect is physiological and automatic.
Heart Rate Variability: Measuring Vagal Tone
Heart rate variability (HRV) measures the variation in time between heartbeats. Counterintuitively, higher variability is healthier—it indicates a flexible, responsive nervous system with strong vagal influence. Low HRV correlates with stress, inflammation, and various health conditions.
Studies have shown that vocal practices increase HRV:
- Om chanting produces significant increases in HRV compared to silent rest
- Humming for as little as five minutes measurably shifts HRV toward parasympathetic dominance
- Singing (especially slow, sustained phrases) elevates HRV more than speaking
- Group chanting synchronises HRV among participants—hearts begin to beat in related rhythms
These are not subtle effects. They are measurable, reproducible, and occur rapidly. The body responds to vocalisation within minutes.
Why "Om" Specifically?
Om (or Aum) is often called the "primordial sound" in Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Modern analysis suggests several reasons it may be particularly effective:
1. The "M" Sound
The humming "mmm" component of Om creates sustained vibration in the nasal passages and sinuses, directly adjacent to vagal nerve branches. The longer the "m," the more stimulation. Traditional Om practice emphasises extending this final hum.
2. Low Frequency
Om is typically chanted at a low, comfortable pitch—often around 110-150 Hz for male voices. Lower frequencies create more physical vibration in the chest and throat, amplifying vagal stimulation.
3. Breath Extension
Sustaining Om naturally lengthens the exhale, which independently stimulates the vagus nerve. Long exhales activate the parasympathetic system; short, rapid breathing activates the sympathetic. Om forces slow, extended breathing.
4. Vibration Location
The three components of Aum—"ah," "oh," "mm"—move the vibration from throat to chest to head. This sequence stimulates vagal fibres along the entire pathway and creates a sense of whole-body resonance.
Research note: A 2011 fMRI study found that Om chanting specifically deactivated the limbic system (emotional reactivity centre) while activating the parasympathetic system. The effect was significantly greater than chanting "sss" or other control sounds.
Beyond Om: Other Vagal Vocal Practices
Humming
Simple humming at any comfortable pitch stimulates the vagus through vibration. The practice requires no training, no belief system, and no special setting. Five minutes of humming produces measurable physiological shifts.
Bee Breath (Bhramari)
The yogic practice of Bhramari pranayama involves inhaling deeply and then exhaling with a humming sound while covering the ears. The sealed ears amplify the internal vibration, intensifying vagal stimulation. Studies show Bhramari reduces blood pressure and anxiety more than silent breathing.
Singing
Particularly slow singing with extended phrases. Choir singers show improved HRV after rehearsals. The combination of breath control, sustained vocalisation, and (in group settings) social connection creates multiple vagal stimulation pathways.
Gargling
Surprisingly, gargling vigorously also stimulates the vagus through throat muscle activation. Some practitioners recommend gargling as a daily vagal toning exercise.
Vocal Toning with Singing Bowls
Toning—sustaining vowel sounds—while playing a singing bowl combines external and internal vibration. The bowl's frequency provides a drone to match; the voice adds vagal stimulation. The practice feels qualitatively different from either alone.
Implications for Sound Healing
Understanding the vagal mechanism has practical implications for sound healing practice:
Include Vocalisation
Invite participants to hum or tone along with the bowls. Even quiet humming enhances vagal stimulation beyond passive listening. The participant becomes part of the sound field rather than merely receiving it.
Use Lower Frequencies
Low-pitched bowls and gongs create more physical vibration, but the voice matters too. Encourage participants to find a comfortable low pitch rather than straining for higher notes.
Extend the Exhale
If guiding breathwork with sound, emphasise long exhales. Inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 8 (or longer). This independently stimulates the vagus while the sound provides entrainment.
Group Coherence
When groups chant or hum together, their HRV patterns begin to synchronise. This is not metaphor—it's measurable physiology. Group sound practices create a shared nervous system state.
The Evolutionary Perspective
Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory suggests that the vagus nerve evolved to support social engagement. The "social engagement system" involves face, voice, and hearing—precisely the systems involved in vocalisation and listening to sound.
From this perspective, humming and chanting signal safety to the nervous system at a level deeper than cognition. They are not relaxing because we think relaxing thoughts while doing them. They are relaxing because they activate the biological systems that evolved to indicate "no threat present, social connection available."
The monks didn't need polyvagal theory to discover this. Thousands of years of experimentation revealed what works. Science now explains why.
Practice
A simple vagal toning practice:
- Sit comfortably. Close your eyes.
- Take three natural breaths.
- Inhale deeply through the nose.
- On the exhale, hum at a comfortable low pitch. Sustain until the breath naturally ends.
- Inhale again. Repeat.
- Continue for 5-10 minutes.
No mantra required. No belief required. Just vibration, breath, and the ancient nerve pathway that connects your voice to your heart.
