Crystal Singing Bowl Set Buying Guide

How to choose a crystal singing bowl set: chakra sets of 7, sets of 3 or 5, notes, sizes, frosted and infused finishes, and the sets we sell now.

← Back to Blog

A crystal singing bowl set is two or more quartz bowls we sell together, so you can play more than one note in the same sitting. A crystal singing bowls set is the same purchase. A category page lists the bowls. This page is how to choose among them: what the set is, how a chakra set of 7 differs from a set of 3 or 5 or from bowls you add one at a time, how notes, sizes and finishes change the choice, whether the set is for home practice or for a practitioner sound bath, and how to carry it. The sets we have now are listed below, with the price on each one.

What a crystal singing bowl set is

Crystal singing bowls are quartz, heated and formed into a bowl. Strike the outer wall, or circle the rim with a mallet, and the bowl holds one musical note. A set is those bowls grouped so the notes belong together. You still play them as separate instruments, one at a time, or with two left ringing. How notes sit together is in our notes on crystal bowl chords.

One bowl is already a complete instrument. A set is for when you want the next note without matching bowls later by ear. Every set we list is also on the crystal singing bowls page, and crystal singing bowl sets is the shop view of the same pieces. A wider account of sound baths, and of choosing a single bowl or a set, is in our sound healing guide.

Chakra sets, smaller sets, and a set you build

A chakra set of seven

A chakra set is seven bowls, usually C, D, E, F, G, A and B, the row often paired from the root to the crown. That map is in our chakra notes. We sell it as a white set, 6 to 12 inches, and as a larger white set, 8 to 14 inches. The premium white set, also 6 to 12 inches, is our fourth iteration and is made to order. The same seven-note row is the amethyst set of 7, the morganite set of 7 and the sapphire set of 7.

A set of three, a set of five, or a pair

A smaller set is fewer notes. The set of 3 is crystal infused, at 7, 9 and 11 inches, listed as crown, throat and solar plexus. The white set of 3 is A, F and D, with a bag and two mallets. The 5 Bowl Sharps Set is C#, D#, F#, G# and A#, about 7 to 11 inches. Those five nest, and the set includes two bags and three mallets. The Earth Star and Soul Star set is a 12 inch B3 and an 8 inch C5. The low note and the high note are often used at the start and the end of a sitting. The sharps sit a semitone above the usual chakra notes. We have written about that row in sharp notes.

Bowls you add yourself

You can start with one note and add the next when you know the room. Single bowls run from 8 to 16 inches. Our guide to a first bowl covers size, note and budget for that start. A set bought together is priced as a group. A bowl from a later order still plays with it.

How to choose notes, sizes and finishes

Notes and tuning

Choose the notes before the colour. F, the heart note, is a warm place to begin if you are still listening. Sharps are a different row. Where a listing records the note, you will see it on the product page and in the list below. Where it does not, we leave it blank. Tuning accuracy is plus or minus 5 cents of the stated note, and we check that before a bowl is offered.

Sizes

Larger bowls speak lower and carry further. Smaller bowls speak higher and take less room. A fair guide is 6 to 8 inches in a quiet room, 9 to 12 inches in the middle, and 13 to 16 inches when the sound has to cross a group. That is why the white chakra set comes in 6 to 12 inches and in 8 to 14 inches. The sharps set runs about 7 to 11 inches. The infused set of 3 is 7, 9 and 11 inches.

Frosted, clear and infused

A clear bowl lets you see through the wall. A frosted bowl has a matte surface. On our chalices that frost is a crystal-sandblasted finish, and only on some pieces. The matte or clear surface is the look of the quartz. The note is the tuning. On the standard white sets, the listing describes a smooth outer surface, so that is the finish we name. An infused bowl has a gemstone fused into the quartz while the bowl is made, so the colour is part of the bowl. Paint sprayed on afterwards sits on the surface only. Our infused sets are amethyst, morganite and sapphire, each a set of seven, and the crystal infused set of three. Gemstone-infused quartz is also called an alchemy finish. In this shop that word means the gemstone was fused in while the bowl was made.

Sustain

We look for a sustain of at least 18 seconds. The standard white sets of 7 state that minimum on the listing. The tone should still be there after the mallet leaves the rim, long enough to sit with. A tone that dies as the mallet lifts leaves you nothing to listen to.

What to listen for

If you hear a set in person, strike one bowl and wait. The note should stay clear. A buzz usually means the bowl is touching the cushion or the table. Reset it and strike again, then move to the next bowl. You are listening for notes you want in the same room, and for that sustain. If two bowls are the purchase, hear them one after the other, then with both still ringing.

Home practice and a practitioner sound bath

At home the practice is yours. You play, and you listen. A set of three, or one bowl, is enough to learn the mallet. Smaller bowls sit on a cushion and pack away. Five to ten minutes is a full sitting. Striking and rimming are in our playing guide.

A practitioner set is for when other people are listening. A chakra set of 7 gives you the full row in one place. The 8 to 14 inch white set carries further than the 6 to 12 inch set. The Earth Star and Soul Star pair covers the low note and the high note. If you would rather lie down while someone else plays, our sound baths in Sydney are booked separately from the shop. People come for rest and meditation.

Prices are in Australian dollars and are read from the catalogue, so they match the product page on the day you read this. Note and size appear when the listing records them. A dash means that detail is not on the listing.

Caring for a set, and carrying it

Quartz is hard, and it is brittle. A bowl can crack from a drop, from a knock against another bowl, or from a sudden change of temperature. Let a set take the temperature of the room. A hot car and then a cold room, or a cold bowl under hot water, is the shock to avoid.

Lift each bowl with two hands. At home, rest it on a cushion or an O-ring, on a stable surface. Keep bowls apart in a box. The 5 Bowl Sharps Set is made to nest, and it includes two bags. The other sets are separate bowls. Wrap each one, or give it a padded bag, before they travel together. A chip at the rim can leave a buzz. Mallets and bags are with the accessories. Cleaning and storage are in the care guide.

You can collect a set free, by appointment, in Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide. Email singingbowlsaus@gmail.com and we will find a time. You are welcome to hear the notes and leave without buying. A bowl set ships within Australia for $60, and it ships overseas. The overseas rate is shown at checkout. One shipping charge applies to the order, at the highest rate in the cart. Orders usually leave on the day you pay, or on the next business day. A change of mind is final. A faulty set, or one damaged in transit, is still covered under the Australian Consumer Law. Tell us about transit damage within three days, and keep the packaging. Rates are on our shipping page, and the conditions are on our refunds page. You can pay by card, PayID or Afterpay, which is four instalments.

Questions

What is a crystal singing bowl set?

A crystal singing bowl set is more than one quartz singing bowl, sold together so the notes can be played in the same sitting. One bowl is already a complete instrument. A set is for when you want several notes. People also call the same purchase a crystal singing bowls set.

Should I buy a chakra set of 7, a smaller set, or single bowls?

A chakra set of 7 is usually C, D, E, F, G, A and B. A set of 3 or the 5 Bowl Sharps Set is fewer notes: our infused set of 3, the white set of 3 in A, F and D, and the sharps in C#, D#, F#, G# and A#. You can also buy single bowls and add a note later.

What is the difference between frosted, clear and infused bowls?

A clear bowl lets you see through the wall. A frosted bowl has a matte surface. That surface is the look of the quartz, and the note is the tuning. An infused bowl has a gemstone fused into the quartz while it is made. We sell amethyst, morganite and sapphire sets of 7 that way, and a crystal infused set of 3. Paint on a finished bowl is only a coating. An alchemy finish, as we use the word, is that fused gemstone.

Which set is for home, and which is for a sound bath?

At home, a set of 3 or a single bowl is enough, and smaller bowls are easier to store. For a sound bath, a chakra set of 7 gives you the full row, and the larger 8 to 14 inch white set carries further. The Earth Star and Soul Star pair is two notes often used at the start and the end. The sound is for rest and meditation.

How long do your bowls sustain, and how accurate is the tuning?

We look for a sustain of at least 18 seconds, and tuning accuracy is plus or minus 5 cents of the stated note. The standard white sets of 7 state that 18 second minimum on the listing. We check pitch and sustain before a bowl is offered.

How do I travel with a set?

Lift each bowl with two hands. Keep bowls apart unless the set is made to nest, as the 5 Bowl Sharps Set is. Use a cushion at home and a padded bag on the move, and avoid knocks and sudden changes of temperature. A bowl set ships within Australia for $60, and overseas. Pickup is free, by appointment, in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Can I hear a set before I buy?

Yes. Pickup is free, by appointment, in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Email singingbowlsaus@gmail.com and we will find a time. You can listen and leave with nothing.
